Consensys, a prominent blockchain and web3 software company, has unveiled the first iteration of MetaMask Snaps to the public. MetaMask Snaps is poised to transform the user experience with MetaMask, the world’s leading self-custody web3 platform, offering unparalleled control and customization.
These Snaps, introduced by third-party developers, can be directly installed into MetaMask wallets, representing a shift from the previous exclusive development of MetaMask features by Consensys-employed developers.
The initial release comprises 34 Snaps, including contributions from developers worldwide, including Nigeria. These Snaps introduce new functionalities, including transaction insights, interoperability with non-EVM blockchains like Bitcoin, and notifications.
The public launch of MetaMask Snaps signifies a significant milestone in MetaMask’s evolution as a wallet. It empowers users to tailor their Web3 experience to their specific needs and preferences with tools developed by a global community of third-party developers.
Resources on how to install the first available Snaps can be found on the official website. This initial phase aims to encourage experienced MetaMask users to try out MetaMask Snaps and provide feedback while the MetaMask team continues to develop the platform further.

Initial Snaps rollout: transaction insights, interoperability, and notifications
As the initial step in realizing this vision, MetaMask Snaps debuts with a total of 34 Snaps. These Snaps have undergone security audits and were manually added to the allow list by the MetaMask team. The ongoing goal is to streamline the process and eventually transition to a permissionless system, eliminating the need for this intermediate step.
These initial Snaps offer unique features:
- Transaction Insights: Enhancing the web3 experience with comprehensive transaction insights, enabling users to identify potential security issues and malicious smart contracts before completing transactions.
- Interoperability: Expanding web3 usage beyond EVM blockchains to include non-EVM blockchains like Bitcoin, Solana, Cosmos, Filecoin, and EVM Layer 2 solutions like StarkNet.
- Notifications: Keeping users informed and engaged with dapp-specific notifications directly within MetaMask, ensuring they don’t miss crucial updates or events.
